Roofing has fewer calls than HVAC or plumbing, but each one is worth more, and storm weeks bring a rush of them. The default job value here is an average repair, not a full replacement, and the close rate is a cautious 30% because most roofing calls start as quote requests.

An example roofing company taking 30 calls a week, using the sourced defaults below. If it answered 80% of the calls it misses, it would keep about $29,189 of that a year. Your numbers will differ, so run your own below.

|---|---|
| 30 calls a week × 27% missed | 8.1 missed calls a week |

| × 50% who never reach you again | 105.3 lost enquiries |

Why it happens
Owners and estimators are often up a ladder or driving between inspections when the phone rings.
After hail or high wind, call volume can jump for days. That's exactly when a missed call goes to the next roofer.
Homeowners after a quote often ring three companies. The first to pick up usually gets the inspection.

Tether / Sample conversation

Thursday, 4:05 pm · the morning after a hailstorm
Thanks for calling. The team is out on inspections today, so I'm taking calls. How can I help?
We had hail last night and I think some shingles are damaged. Can someone come and look?
I can set that up for the team to confirm. Is any water coming inside, or is it just the roof surface for now?
No leaks yet, but I'll be filing an insurance claim.
Understood. I'll note it as storm damage with an insurance claim, no active leak, and ask the estimator to call you with inspection times.
Tether: Understood. I'll note it as storm damage with an insurance claim, no active leak, and ask the estimator to call you with inspection times. Outcome: Inspection request sent to the estimator: hail damage
Where the defaults come from
We picked the conservative end of every range. Most published missed-call figures come from companies that sell answering services, so we say when a number is one of those, or our own estimate.
| Default | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Calls a week | 30 a week | MoxiSync estimate. Example volume of 30 inbound calls a week for a small, owner-led business. Replace it with your own phone log. |
| Missed-call rate | 27% | Invoca (2022), as cited by The Open University's OpenLearn Create. Around 27% of calls to home-service companies go unanswered. Vendor-sourced; we use it as stated rather than the higher 62% figure often repeated online. |
| New-customer share | 50% | MoxiSync estimate. Half of missed roofing calls are new enquiries: roofers see fewer repeat callers than HVAC or plumbing. |
| Never call back | 50% | MoxiSync estimate. Half of missed new callers never reach you again. Lower than the ~85% 'don't call back after voicemail' figure attributed to Dialzara (2023), because we could not verify that study. |
| Booking rate | 30% | MoxiSync estimate. Three in ten enquiries become a signed job, because most roofing calls start as a quote request. |
| Average first job | $1,155 | Angi roof repair cost guide (2025 data). Average roof repair of about $1,155 (typical range $393–$1,934). A repair, not a replacement, so it stays conservative. |
Common questions
Angi's 2025 roof repair guide puts the average repair at about $1,155. Replacement tickets are much larger, but not every caller needs one. Starting from a repair keeps the estimate conservative.
Roofing calls are often quote requests, and homeowners compare several firms. We use 30% as a cautious default. Replace it with your own quote-to-signed rate.
No. It only counts callers you never speak to. It doesn't model price competition.
